Ten outfits for ten days to fight fast fashion and find a new style

By Giulia Busellato

The hot season is upon us, the days are longer, and the sun is brighter. This means it’s time to dust off our summer sandals and replace the woolly jumpers with crop tops and shorts. This year AuNaturel propose a seasonal change with a twist. We all have tops and dresses we do not wear but we still keep it because “you’ll never know”. Well, this time we ask you to Marie Kondo it and keep only the items that spark joy. And what a better time to start de-cluttering your wardrobe if not during lockdown? Don’t worry, we know it can be overwhelming so to help you out, you can use the 10x10 challenge.

This challenge was created in 2015 by fashion blogger and designer Lee (the Bee) Vosburgh. She writes on her website: “The challenge was born as an exercise to help encourage myself to get more creative with my clothes during a 30 day shopping fast.” Lee created the concept of a “capsule closet”, a minimal wardrobe with few garments that will inspire you to try out new outfits and exercise versatility. The challenge helps with taking a break from fast fashion and shopping. Business Insider has reported that in 2014 people bought 60% more garments than they did in early 2000 with 85% of clothes ending in landfills. The message of the challenge is clear: you don’t need loads to look gorgeous. These are the rules: pick any 10 items from your closet– underwear and accessories do not count; get creative and style 10 different outfits. Try to use only those 10 outfits for the next 10 days. Lee shared her “beginner’s formula” to help anybody who wants to try out the challenge. She suggests picking 2 pairs of shoes, one formal and one flat, four tops, one dress for a fancy occasion or a date, two bottoms either jeans or skirt and a top layers like a denim jacket or a cardigan. She also recommends checking the weather forecast and what are your plans for the next seven days to better tailor your looks depending on the occasion.

However, not everybody finds the challenge amusing. Aleksandra Jasinska, 22, Fashion student at UAL says: “I wear a different outfit every day. I express myself with my style and clothes. Having to choose only ten items it’s extreme. I think I will get bored. I would feel trapped and forced to wear the same things all over again.” So whether you are trying to clear out your wardrobe, find a new fashion or help the planet, this challenge is definitely one to try.
